How big is this issue? • A study by Softchoice found that 21 percent of servers were still using Server 2003 in the first half of 2015. • CloudPhysics reported similar numbers in June 2015 saying 18 percent of Windows Server virtual machines are running on Windows 2003. • An end-of-life survey by Bit9 found that 30 percent of enterprises surveyed plan to run Server 2003 after EOL support. • Netcraft's July 2015 Web Server Survey found 175 million web sites are served directly from Windows Server 2003 servers. These account for more than one fifth of all web sites in the survey. • What about SQL 2005? Kuba Stolarski from IDC said in a statement, 'We estimate there are approximately 800,000 servers globally still running SQL Server 2005.” As you can see, by the number of servers still running Windows Server 2003 and/or SQL 2005, it’s a big issue. This is a great opportunity to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2014. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Microsoft will no longer issue security updates for any version of Windows Server 2003. If you are still running Windows Server 2003 in your data center, you need to take steps now to plan and execute a migration strategy to protect your infrastructure.
